BioDiesel Project

The forest industry is undergoing a significant structural change. The Finnish wood processing industry needs to find new products and operation models. The various types of biorefineries are examples of the innovations that are being developed.

Owing to heavy demand in the EU area, liquid biofuels are seen as an interesting alternative. The EU countries have made a binding agreement to increase the share of transport fuels to a minimum of 10 percent by 2020. Finland’s own preliminary goals are even more challenging. In 2020, the share of liquid biofuels should be as high as 20%.

To be able to meet these challenges, Metsäliitto and Vapo have concluded a consortium agreement on the preliminary design of a BtL plant. At the same time, environmental impact assessments have been launched in four potential locations.

Metsäliitto and Vapo have extensive expertise

The Metsäliitto Cooperative, with its owner-members, and Vapo, with its bioenergy business, have access to extensive supplies of biomass raw materials. This is an essential prerequisite for constructing and operating large-scale liquid biofuel plants.

Metsäliitto and Vapo also have considerable experience in raw material procurement chains, biomass processing, process industry, and large investment projects.

The aim of the Project in 2010 is to explore the technological and business viability of a possible plant investment. Environmental impact assessments have already been launched in Kemi and Äänekoski in Finland, in Jönköping in Sweden, and in Kunda in Estonia.
