Carbon dioxide capture

When synthesis gas is produced, carbon dioxide is captured from the raw gas. This CO2 is extremely pure (>98%).  A BtL plant produces large quantities of bio carbon dioxide as an “end-of-the-pipe” product.

One of the sub-areas of the Project is to explore the sequestration and storage of the carbon dioxide, thus preventing the greenhouse gas produced in the process being released back into the atmosphere.  In this way a BtL plant would remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere since some of the carbon bound in timber would end up in geological formations.

As Finland’s bedrock lacks suitable strata for sequestration and there are no old oil wells that could be used for final storage, the carbon dioxide would have to be transported elsewhere for permanent storage.
